A Day Of Affirmation – Soweto Revisited

I recall the Soweto uprising in June 1976 because it was the summer I finished my four years at Xavier High School. That deadly uprising made international news headlines and became a major story in Micronesia covered by the Voice of America radio news. It was one of the bigger stories back then that brought Apartheid under the world limelight and inspired interests in some of Palau’s college students in Hawaii who became the early initiators of Palau’s de-colonialization movement.

Lawmakers Commit To Save Lives And Raise Revenues

Tobacco taxation – a national development issue

Lawmakers recently participated in a national tobacco tax workshop where convincing evidence was presented to show that raising tobacco taxes is a proven way to both save lives and raise revenues.  However, the taxes must be raised to an effective level to have this effect.  To do anything less is not only discriminating against the poor and the youth, it also feeds directly into the hands of the tobacco industry that has everything to gain from our people’s continued addiction to this deadly drug.
