Enhancing Palau’s Cultural Identity In A Modernizing World

In today’s age of globalization and rapidly modernizing world, maintaining Palau’s cultural identity is an ever present challenge. It poses a challenge because the forces of the market place are powerful and many in Palau feel that the two cannot co-exist simultaneously. Others say that economic development can obliterate our cultural identity. Some entrepreneurs say that culture itself is the biggest impediment to progress while others opine that economic growth actually strengthens and enhances our cultural identity.

“Armarik”

There are some English words that just shouldn’t be said with a Palauan accent. EVER. Now, you may say that I’m “melenguuling” but sometimes when I hear someone say something with the heaviest of accent; it makes my skin crawl with goose bumps. And don’t try thinking this is weird because even if you’re not from the southern islands of Palau, you know what I mean because you’ve felt it.
