God Spares Palau

By Fuana Tmarsel —-

For a week, Palau residents were preparing for Bopha. At first it was tropical storm Bopha making it’s way toward Palau from Pohnpei – forecasted to hit Saturday morning. Later in the week, it has packed winds to reach typhoon condition, but that too also soon changed, and by Friday November 30, 2012, people were warned that Super Typhoon Bopha was making landfall at midnight, December 02, 2012 with destructive sustained winds between 115 and 155 mph.

My daughter who lives in Washington got his missionary team together to pray for Palau, as well with many people around the world. On Saturday, she was texting just about every 2 hours to check up on me. Knowing that I live in an old wooden house with tin-roof – she kept urging me to seek shelter. I decided to join my friends at the church.

It was an exciting time to fellowship with Christian sisters. After dinner, that Sunday night, we had a time of prayer and worship. I was impressed by the Psalm of David:

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth

You have set your glory above the heavens,

From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise,

To silence the foe and the avenger

When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers,

The moon and the stars that you have set in place,

What is man that you are mindful of him,

The son of men that you care for him

You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings

You have crown them with glory and honor

You have made him a little lower than the heavenly things

You have put everything under his feet

All the flocks, the herds and the beasts in the field

All the birds in the air

And all the fish in the seas,

O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth.

The fury wind seemed to have made landfall quicker than predicted. It walloped upon us in a frantic flurry, so it seemed, from the sound. I pulled my mattress to the window and opened it about foot long to catch the breeze drifting in. For a moment, I was alarmed by the violent sound of the gust winds battering the trees, but I remembered God reminding me that night that He is bigger than Bopha, or any super typhoon for that matter. Assured of His care I drifted off to dreamland  ‘ til the next day.

A few days later I was alerted to an interview with Williams, a meteorologist for the U.S National Weather Service in Guam over Radio Australia. Turning to the radio I heard a lady say “Palau has escaped the full fury of the wind of Super Typhoon Bopha …..  then Derek Williams said, “It was headed toward Palau and just at the last minute, actually this afternoon, it just turned to the west fortunately and west side of them.” God spared Palau – this helpless tiny island archipelago out in the pacific. God showed up and covered us under his mighty wings. Actually, God helps those who cannot help themselves. To God be the Glory.
